"Justin K. Broadrick’s Pale Sketcher alias fuses the Godflesh / Jesu founder’s longstanding obsessions, fusing metal-grade emotional heft to ambient-tinged electronic excursions. On the Seventh Heaven EP, Broadrick follows up his 2010 debut, Pale Sketches: Demixed, with yet another stylistic shift, deepening and coloring the Pale Sketcher sound in ways that have only been hinted at previously.

From the opening strains of “Seventh Heaven”—a grid of repeating, micro-sampled melodic noise and vocals buttressed by a dancefloor-ready beat—it becomes apparent that Broadrick is growing as a producer, and Pale Sketcher is reaping the rewards. The slow-motion dronescapes of Demixed have given way to a positively light-on-its feet rhythmic sense and a Seefeel-esque attention to textural detail. “The Rainy Season” furthers the theme, draping shoegazing guitar filigree over a grimy breakbeat and an achingly lovely vocoded melody. King Midas Sound (aka UK’s The Bug, Broadrick’s sometime-collaborator in duo Techno Animal) remixes Demixed’s “Wash It All Away” into a doomy alternate-universe Portishead single, featuring Hitomi on vocals to this originally instrumental track wth a feminine quaver and frying the low end to a crisp. The EP’s final two tracks—the snowy ambient static of “Resonanz Therapy Music” and the head-nodding lullabye of “Drag Your Feet”—both hint at the limitless future of Justin K. "If Justin K. Broadrick’s Jesu project is the sound of the UK artist exorcising his demons, pummeling them into submission with tsunamis of guitar noise, Pale Sketcher is the sound that echoes through his head in the aftermath—a haunting, lonely sound-world of distressed beats and hazy melancholia. Broadrick’s electronic-music projects have historically taken a bit of a back seat to his more well-known metal excursions (his founding roles in Godflesh and Napalm Death, his long-running shoegaze-metal project Jesu), but with Jesu: Pale Sketches De-Mixed Broadrick brings Pale Sketcher into the spotlight, adding a new layer to the prolific artist’s already-dense body of work.

Jesu: Pale Sketches De-Mixed consists of songs originally released on the 2007 Jesu album Pale Sketches—a collection of electronics-oriented Jesu songs that didn’t quite fit on a conventional release. On De-Mixed, Broadrick revisits these Jesu misfits and plunges them deeper into the abyss, de- and re-constructing them into lumbering, beat-driven synthesizer symphonies. Album opener “Don’t Dream It (Mirage Mix)” pairs twinkling piano keys with a foreboding swath of synthesized drone, juxtaposing the ugly and the beautiful in a way that evokes the mood—if not necessarily the sound—of Jesu. “Supple Hope” brings Broadrick’s vocals into the mix, adding a human element to the stuttering beat as smoky sibilants hiss around the periphery. Standout “Dummy (Banhoff Version)” breaks form with its lightly sweetened nostalgia, buzzing and humming like late-summer fireflies over a lugubrious breakbeat. Closer “Plans That Fade (Faded Dub)” evokes its title to a T, all echo-y tendrils, reverberating rimshots, and translucent vocal sounds that melt into the air like smoke.

On Jesu: Pale Sketches De-Mixed, Broadrick displays a delicate touch with musical moods, crafting dark, sweet hymns that alternately soothe and unsettle. The crunch of rusty industrial machinery, the murmur of a summer wind—these are Justin K. Broadrick’s Pale Sketches."

N.B: I've received some rather concerned messages on Twitter regarding the jesu and Pale Sketcher split ; the split concept is not as polarized as is being assumed, nor is it intended to be. All electronics are NOT being removed from jesu, it is just that new songs will not be 'electronica' oriented / driven, like the 'Why Are We Not Perfect' EP and the jesu / Envy split EP, for example. Songs for jesu LP 3 for Caldo Verde, some of which are still in the writing process, have many layers of keyboards / synthesizers, etc, but the guitar is the 'lead' instrument. Pale Sketcher exists so I can take the jesu 'electronica' sound further, something I've wished to do for some time, the jesu sound will not be as bare as some have imagined due to this 'sound split'.

New project - Pale Sketcher

At the turn of the New Year, I signed a deal with Ghostly International to develop a new project - Pale Sketcher. Pale Sketcher is intended as a vehicle for me to explore, exclusively and in more detail, the 'electronica' side of jesu.
It occurred to me during the writing of the last Jesu EP 'Opiate Sun' in early 2009, that Jesu, first and foremost, was intended to be a guitar oriented project. The 'electronica' side of Jesu was just an inevitable direction for me, but never satisfied with this battle between guitars and electronica with Jesu, I decided to separate the two directions - Jesu, now, and for the forseeable future, being guitar based exclusively, with Pale Sketcher being the project where I can focus and develop further, the Jesu 'electronica' sound, without need for further fusion or compromise.

Ghostly International saw sense in the concept for this project, when I touched upon this direction with my remix of School Of Seven Bells for Ghostly.

So, forthcoming on Ghostly Intl in August 2010, is, on both CD and digital (vinyl maybe TBA) the entry release into the Pale Sketcher project - the entire out of print Jesu release 'Pale Sketches' demixed by Pale Sketcher! Two further remixes, one by King Midas Sound and one from Syntaks, will accompany the release, formats TBA.

Godflesh 'Streetcleaner' Update

I have had a few questions / assumptions on Twitter regarding the news that the Godflesh 'Streetcleaner' LP is being reworked. The truth is that I am finally remastering the album, there are no remixes / re-recordings or such nonsense. Additionally, I am hoping to compile an extra discs worth of rough and original mixes from the 'Streetcleaner' studio sessions, also rehearsal versions, etc. More news as I compile this. If all goes to plan, this will be a very exciting and much needed update of the 'Streetcleaner' LP. Planned for release on Earache in June 2010 to coincide with Godflesh at Hellfest.

White Static Demon is a new Justin K Broadrick project for which he has been working on recordings for over one year. Again, like Council Estate Electronics, White Static Demon was inspired by Justin collecting and compiling material from Final cassette releases on his Post Mortem Rekordings label circa 1984-87, specifically the early uncompromising brutal power electronics driven Final, unlike Council Estate Electronics which was inspired by the more open ended Throbbing Gristle / Tangerine Dream ('Phaedra' most notably) inspired Final of old. JKB, excited again by this eighties power electronics sound and what inspired Final to take this direction initially in 1984/85, namely Ramleh / Broken Flag, Whitehouse / Come Org, Consumer Electronics / Iphar and M.B (Maurizio Bianchi) set about revitalising and revisiting this hateful / black / power electronics sound, utilizing analogue electronics and voice only, coupled with a now more mature, textured and psychedelic approach to the production of such material, JKB throughout 2008 and now 2009 has been recording sessions for this new and what will become a prolific project. Presented here is the first album, available in the digital format only, like Council Estate Electronics, there are many releases forthcoming on both vinyl and CDr across many labels. SOLARIS BC - 'Submerged Technology' (AREC015)

Solaris BC was yet another short lived Justin K Broadrick project, designed to be released on his also short lived label Lo Fibre circa 1995-96. Lo Fibre released four 12" EP's throughout this period, the label was intended to be an outlet for JKB and related to release minimal / lo fi techno. Around this same period JKB and Kevin Martin (The Bug / Techno-Animal / etc) also worked the minimal / maximal techno project The Sidewinder for Mille Plateaux/Force Inc and Virgin, this culminated in two releases, the album 'Colonized' which was released on the aforementioned labels and the 12" Vinyl only EP 'Implant' for the Lo Fibre label, The Sidewinder and Solaris BC projects ran parallel to each other around this period, and both recorded albums - 'Colonized' saw a release whilst the Solaris BC album presented here for the first time waited for release on Sentrax whilst the label re-assessed its distribution, unfortunately Sentrax then folded and JKB shelved the Solaris BC album indefinitely until now. 'Submerged Technology' is the full album as it was intended for release in 1996, remastered by JKB in late 2008. Avalanche Recordings presents two new and exclusive digital download only LP releases...

First up is KRACKHEAD - 'From Hell'. 'From Hell' compiles every track produced from this JKB (as the pseudonym JK Flesh) project, recorded between 1997 and 1999. Included here remastered are the only two tracks that were ever available from this project - 'Cruise Control' from the 'Lo Fibre Companion' compilation on JKB's short lived Lo Fibre label and 'Phaseday' from the 'Future Noir' compilation. Some of the tracks were intended to be released as an EP on the short lived Spite label from Patric Catani (ec80r, Puppetmastaz, etc) but the label folded before release, the rest were tracks intended for the first full length LP 'From Hell', which at one point was discussed for release through Ipecac just before the project was shelved and became absorbed as an inspiration for the JK Flesh and K Mart (Kevin Martin / The Bug) project Curse Of The Golden Vampire specifically the 'Mass Destruction' Ipecac album. The other new release is from COUNCIL ESTATE ELECTRONICS. Council Estate Electronics is a new project from JKB and Diarmuid Dalton, born from vintage analog only synth and fx improvisations. Project began early 2008 inspired by JKB as he was collecting tracks from old Final cassettes culled from 1983-87 for the forthcoming early Final set. JKB and Diarmuid set about recording long improv sessions using only old analog instruments much like Final did around 1983-87. These sessions are then edited and mixed/produced by JKB. Here is the debut release 'Kitsland', four tracks over approx. 51 mins. Reference points include - Throbbing Gristle, Basic Channel and King Tubby. Justin K Broadrick has restarted his web label Avalanche Recordings which he originally began in 2000 with the limited CDR issue of the then unreleased Godflesh EP 'Messiah'. The label quietly resurfaced recently with the highly limited release of four FINAL improvised and hand numbered CDR's, which were to be sold as limited editions at Broadrick related concerts.

Avalanche Recordings now presents its first full release in the form of 'Pale Sketches' limited to 2000 copies only on CD, an album compiling unreleased Jesu material containing some songs culled from even before the full conceptual realisation of the project. It is a compilation of Jesu songs that Broadrick felt did'nt fit with previous Jesu releases, so he chose to mix these songs this year and compile them for their own release. Available to buy now on pre-order and shipping in early October, the CD is housed in a full colour 6 panel digipak and contains 8 songs, 4 of which are instrumental, song 4 'The Playgrounds Are Empty' can be heard over at the official Jesu myspace site within the next 24 hours...

In January 2008 'Pale Sketches' will also be available from the Avalanche Store on 180 grm double vinyl, along with the long awaited vinyl version of the first Jesu release 'Heart Ache' and a new FINAL studio album on picture disc only. ADDENDUM, 11TH MARCH - THE U.S EMBASSY HAVE SENT OUT THE WORK PERMITS TO JESU LATE, THEY WILL NOT HAVE THEM UNTIL MON. OR TUES. GURANTEED LATEST, CONSEQUENTLY DC & PHILLY WILL NOT FEATURE JESU, FIRST JESU SHOW NOW NYC. SORRY FOR THE CONTINUED RIDICULOUSNESS.

The impending permits/visas finally cleared for Jesu this week ; the unforeseen backlog at the U.S embassy in London had somewhat reduced enabling the band to be interviewed and be issued their work permits/visas.

This means that Jesu will perform its first live show in the U.S this Wednesday, March 14th in NYC at Irving Plaza and will complete the rest of the tour with ISIS from there on in, performing at the Hydra Head Showcase at SXSW, Austin, Texas on the 15th March along the way.

Many thanks for your patience and huge apologies to those that missed Jesu at earlier shows due to these unforeseen circumstances. A Jesu headline tour of the U.S over the next 9 - 12 months will hopefully compensate somewhat, especially since Jesu now have permits/visas for 12 months !

BAD NEWS REGARDING START OF U.S TOUR

We are sorry to report that Jesu are still stuck in England and will NOT be playing the Spaceland, L.A headline/release party ; work permits for Jesu have still not been cleared by U.S officials/customs and the band are not allowed into the U.S until the permits are officially cleared. The band are yet to receive a date of clearance and simply have to wait until they do so before entering the U.S, hence Jesu will not be appearing at any shows with ISIS until the permits are available and Jesu can leave England.

Please watch this space for further news ; once Jesu have their permits we will post confirmation of this and the first show that Jesu will play in the U.S.
Hopefully the band will not miss more than the first week of this tour, being the bands first tour of the U.S.

In related Jesu live line up news, Jesu bass player Diarmuid Dalton will not be playing any of the U.S dates due to being refused a work permit for the U.S for this tour.
Diarmuid has been replaced for this tour by long time collaborator (and fellow Birmingham, England native) bass player Dave Cochrane (Justin and Dave played together in Head Of David, Sweet Tooth, Ice, God and now their new project together GREY MACHINE).

Drummer Ted Parsons has also been unable to make this first Jesu U.S tour due to family commitments and has been replaced by drummer Danny Walker, a Los Angeles native who plays for many bands including Intronaut.

Above is the front sleeve of the Jesu Aurora Borealis ltd 12" vinyl release - 'Sun Down' / 'Sun Rise', sleeve by Seldon Hunt. This is going to the manufacturers shortly, hopefully for an end of 2006 release.

The Jesu half of the split 12" with Eluvium on both Hydra Head and Temporary Residence is complete.

Also in the process is another Jesu split with Battle Of Mice to be released on Robotic Empire on limited 12" vinyl and limited CDep.

Justin in the Final guise is currently remixing [utilising guitar and processing only] Fear Falls Burning a project from Vidna Obmana for a vinyl box set remix release.

The new Jesu album, recently titled 'Conqueror', is currently at the end of the mixing stage and is about to be mastered. There are 8 songs on 'Conqueror', with a running time of just over 60 minutes. Planned for a February 2007 release on Hydra Head, a U.S tour will coincide with the release, shortly followed by tours of Japan and Europe. More details as they come through...

Other Jesu releases are also on the horizon : Aurora Borealis will be releasing a limited edition 12" vinyl only EP featuring 2 new experimental Jesu compositions entitled 'Sun Down' b/w 'Sun Rise', each song is approx. 18 minutes in length. Both songs feature Justin and Diarmuid only. This is mixed, mastered and with the label. Release date TBA.

Currently being mixed is a limited edition split 12" vinyl EP with Eluvium, this release is a joint venture between Hydra Head and Temporary Residence, with 2000 copies being issued by each label. This features 3 new Jesu compositions, recorded by Justin only. Release date TBA.

Justin has recently had remixes released of Knut, 5ive and Agoraphobic Nosebleed. He is currently finishing a dub remix for Ted Parsons involved project N.I.C for their upcoming dub album. Details are also currently being solidified for Justin remixing Explosions In The Sky. More news soon...

In other news there is a new Justin instigated band project - GREY MACHINE, the first album is currently in fruition. Many of Justin's old cohorts are involved in what will be a floating line up ; Dave Cochrane, a co-conspirator of Justin's [together in Head Of David, God, Sweet Tooth and Ice] is soon to be recording his bass parts. Expect something vicious, loose, heavy and psychedelic. More news very soon....

Justin has been invited to join Sunn0))) as a member of the group on their upcoming October 2006 U.K and Ireland tour. Yet again details TBA very soon...

Justin recently mixed and produced the Pelican London live show at the Scala from December 2005 from what is to be both a DVD and a limited double vinyl set. Release TBA. Justin will now also be mixing and producing an ISIS one off performance of 'Oceanic' in its entirety, performed in London as part of the ATP festival in July 2006. This is to be a DVD release with other formats TBA. Justin [with Diarmuid] as Final opened for ISIS at this event, he also guested on guitar with ISIS on the song 'Weight'...

JESU - Silver EP

The new Jesu EP 'Silver' is to be released on CD by Hydra Head on April 11th '06. Conspiracy Recs. vinyl release date : TBC, this vinyl edition will come in grey and white limited editons besides the standard black. Look out for a Hydra Head mail order special of 'Silver' close to the release.

'Silver' contains four new songs : 'Silver', 'Star', 'Wolves' and 'Dead Eyes' with a total running time of 29 minutes approx. Diarmuid Dalton plays bass on all songs, Ted Parsons plays drums on 'Silver'. Short clips of each song (30 seconds approx.) in mp3 format can be heard at the Jesu site at Avalanche, follow the Jesu link on the right.

Jesu will be touring europe with Final in May '06. Plans for touring the U.S.A are in the process, the band could not establish work permits in time to join Isis on their forthcoming U.S tour, which had been planned.

The 2nd Jesu album is currently in the process of being recorded.

Late news - I will be doing both the live sound and taking care of the audio recording for a live DVD to be recorded of Pelican live as part of their latest tour at the London Scala,Kings Cross on Tues 20th Dec.
I will be mixing this Pelican live recording at Avalanche in the new year. This DVD release is planned for spring 2006.

JESU + FINAL - Zoobar, Rome, It, 17th Nov 2005

Jesu played its first full show with Ted Parsons in Rome on 17th Nov, predictably without any decent amount of sleep beforehand, due to early flights. We often wonder what it would be like to play a show with good sleep. I played as Final at this show too, playing the same set as I did at the Jarboe show.

We were not as rehearsed as we would've liked but the show went well all the same. This was the first time we had played 'Walk On Water' live. The rest of the set was 'Your Path To Divinity (extended)', 'Friends Are Evil', 'Tired Of Me' and 'Guardian Angel'. The promoters for this show were from Radio CittÃ Aperta, and we would like to add that they treated us so so well.

Final - live supporting The Living Jarboe Nov 7th 2005

Jesu originally was requested by Jarboe to perform at this show but logistically it just could not happen. Final seemed the next obvious choice. This was my first 'show' as Final in 20 years !
The last time Final played live was an extremely confused performance in Birmingham in May 1985, probably in front of 12 people.

This night at the Scala, Kings Cross, London was extremely different to say the least. I performed with just a laptop, manipulating existing songs, most of which were culled from '3', I played even newer forthcoming material too, along with song 3 from '2'. Diarmuid Dalton took care of the out front sound ensuring that it was as loud and full as we could possibly get it.

The Living Jarboe was amazing ; the performance from Jarboe and her band was quite incredible. Jarboe had requested if I could take care of their live sound out front and add dynamics from the mixing desk and generally feel free with their sound.

Final - '3' front sleeve

Here is the front sleeve of the long awaited Final - '3'. This 2 x CD set will be released by Neurot Recordings in late Feb 2006, apparently there isn't anything that could delay this release any further !
Nearly 5 years in the making and with over 140 minutes of material, '3' generally focuses upon fractured and submerged melodies some structured some free, the guitar was the basis for around 60% of the music on '3'. The release has 27 pieces mostly quite short in length in comparison to earlier Final works, each CD contains one 15 minute plus piece, both of which were composed with Jesu bassist Diarmuid Dalton, Diarmuid also collaborates on an additional three pieces on the double set. The Final website has one piece from the CD set - 'Little Pictures', in mp3 format available for download, along with an unreleased and exclusive outtake ('Failure') that didn't make '3' but was remixed after '3' was completed, this piece is not available anywhere else, and will not be available anywhere else.
